Radios by Ultra, Bang & Olufsen and Roberts.

Popular music in the late 1950s and early 1960s was largely driven by sales of 45rpm singles and the equipment used to play them was accordingly basic, with combined record player and speaker combinations of the Dansette variety a popular choice. With increasingly sophisticated multi-track stereo recording techniques and the growth in popularity of long playing (LP) records in the mid-1960s came greater demand for high-quality audio equipment. Cased radiograms containing record player and speakers catered for most needs but for true enthusiasts a Hi-Fi system with separate turntable, amplifier and speakers was the only option. Initially this market was catered for by specialist British manufacturers such as Leak and Garrard, but as the market grew so did competition from Japanese manufacturers.
